Why Opting Out of Your Green Waste Bin Does Not Reduce Your Rates
Brisbane City Council has now rolled green waste recycling into the standard kerbside collection service for eligible properties. Most homes already have a green bin and many landlords naturally ask whether they can reduce their costs by opting out. The answer is simple. Even if you return the green bin you still pay the same Waste Utility Charge on your rates.
The Waste Utility Charge is a single annual fee that covers all waste services across the city. This includes red yellow and green bin collections resource recovery centres the kerbside large item collection program recycling initiatives public bins and landfill management. It also includes the Queensland Government waste levy. Because the charge is tied to the entire citywide system rather than to individual bins the cost does not change based on whether you choose to use the green bin service at your property.
Landlords often expect that opting out will remove a line item from the rates notice. Council has confirmed that it does not. The green bin can be collected if you do not want the physical bin on site but the Waste Utility Charge remains unchanged. Understanding this prevents confusion with tenants about outgoings and helps owners plan their cash flow accurately.
Green waste recycling does offer value if you choose to keep the bin. Correct use reduces landfill waste lowers greenhouse emissions and contributes to compost used across Brisbane. Many tenants also appreciate having the option of garden waste disposal especially in homes with lawns established gardens or landscaping.
